Sister Act...the final act !
I woke Sunday morning having, sensibly and maturely , abstained from too much Prosecco the night before at my Police Academy premier. In the knowledge I had been less than present at home for the previous 3 days, I bounced out of bed, showered and joined the boys at mass. I suppose it could be seen as method acting for my religious part...I am sooo Daniel Day Lewis ! After a quick visit to my mother in law (MIL), so as to confirm to her I actually exist and not just the social butterfly she believes me to be, and secretly loves me for ( it's quite a secret!), I took a lift from The Shoe Queen to the local hostelry for our filming of Sister Act. The gang all arrived, giggly, excited and nervous in equal measure. From early on there was a healthy amount of banter between the religious and the gangsters, old nuns and young nuns, the Reverend Mother and the Monsignor (yes, there was definitely some on screen chemistry between us )
Sister Mary Clarence (our Whoopi) and her beautiful young singing sisters brought a bit of glamour, talent and sparkle to the black and white theme. Vince and Joey , initially very soft spoken and pleasant turned into vicious gangsters and their violence hard to watch. Tarantino was apparently involved in coaching them. The Young Ernie must have spent most of his life playing dead, as he made an excellent and convincing corpse and died brilliantly. Joey aka our “Technical Director” or "Spielberg" was a massive addition to the cast as his efforts for sound and lighting made all the difference, and his sense of fun infectious. He will never be the same again !
The singing nuns, Sisters Mary Austin and Mary Paul supported the initially shy Sister Mary Roberts played by the Galway Girl ( rumour has it Chicken Curran loved her in that costume!) The very giddy Sister Mary Patrick was joined by her actual sister ( two of my seven dwarf sisters in law) , the most nun-like of them all Sister Springer Spaniel.
The indignant Sister Mary Lazurus was played by one if my new favourite people Elastic Elaine , who, when singing, looked as if she may have had her nose in the incense ! Sister Alma was hugely enthusiastic on her keyboard, once her hearing kicked in. The long arm of the law was represented by one actual Garda Finnegan and the man who didn’t want to take off the uniform ....Sergeant Sheehy....he brought his own handcuffs apparently ???? He scared the shite out of the two blokes who drove through the sleepy local village at 2.00 pm as he stood outside the pub brandishing a very realistic pistol...oh how we laughed !!!! They didn't !
Filming was great fun, frolicking around the playground, singing in the church and shooting people, literally, in the pub . When we finally finished up, we headed off, in full costume ,to another local pub, to the delight of all involved as the nuns arrived en masse. One punter got particularly excited and paid €50 just to have his photo taken with us.....mmmmmm ! Well it's all for the GAA !
I left the building a couple of West Coast Coolers later and headed home with The dwarfs and the Shoe Queen , a little giggly, a bit tired but delighted the 8th, 9th and 10th of November had gone so well, been such fun and enjoyed by all.
